"Sheila Nicholls knows all about taking risks." It says on her web site. http://www.essexgirl.com/sheilanicholls/sheila.html
"The poetic, political, acerbic and uncompromising singer-songwriter took a long and twisted route to arrive at her 1999 debut album, Brief Strop."
A twisted route that included a risky nude invasion of the hallowed turf of the Lords Cricket ground in May 29, 1989 during the one day international between Australia and England.
Sheila Elizabeth Nicholls (born February 9, 1970 in Colchester, Essex) was only 19 when, as a translated version of the web site (http://nacktiv.de/rezi-galerie/rezi-galerie.html) put it:
And a pretty memory: The “Streakerin” Sheila Nicholls gets rid of 1989 in a stadium of its dresses and jumps luck-blessedly smiling, about the playing field one with 25.000 spectators of occupied Kricketplace: Hurdle jump, hand conditions, somersault.
In other words, Sheila, described as "shapely" by newspapers, ran onto the
Lords pitch and cavorted before 25,000 fans. She had not been drinking, and streaked because, "someone said it would be funny if there was a streaker, and suddenly I had this urge. I waited for the over to finish before going on to the pitch. It wouldn't be
cricket to interrupt play." Having escaped a number of police officers, she "rounded it off with a cartwheel." Led from the field into
the pavillion, the Australian players wanted to shake her hand, and "a big fat chap with an MCC tie strode up to me and said 'Jolly well done.' That made me feel much better." She was merely cautioned for disorderly behaviour. Newspaper commentators delighted in her appearance, one pointed out that a naked female, as opposed to a nude one, was a refreshing sight, and "she was as white and lumpy as the rest of us."
Shelia is perhaps the most famous former female streaker having achieved enduring fame after her day in the sun. She went on to have a successful career in the American music business. Nicholls travelled to the United States later in 1989 and began performing with her band, Sheila Nicholls and the Splendid Frock, in New York City in the mid-1990s. She eventually found herself in Los Angeles. She wrote songs as she led a peripatetic existence of odd jobs. After
Brief Strop She started her own label, Essex Girl Records. The song "Fallen for You," from the album, became a hit. In mid-2002, Nicholls released her second album, Wake. The album's first single, "Faith," reached the pop charts. Nicholls' third album is due out in mid-to-late 2007. Nicholls, who describes herself as bisexual, is married and has at least one child.resides in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California.
What will she be most remembered for. A brief nude stint, or a long successful carrer as a singer. Perhaps the information website www.mbceo.com. has the answer. It reffered to her as a "Streaker, later a musician."
I had a bad year in 1989. I wish I'd known about her streak then. It would have cheered me up. |
